FDA-approved CREON Medication Guide
(for patients)
How CREON® Works
Pancreatic enzyme products, such as CREON®, replace the enzymes normally made by the pancreas. Lipase breaks down fats, protease breaks down proteins, and amylase breaks down carbohydrates.
This is how CREON® works:
- A capsule containing pancreatic enzymes enters the stomach
- The capsule releases spheres containing pancreatic enzymes, which are protected by a special coating
- The spheres mix with food and travel to the small intestine, where digestion and absorption of nutrients take place
- The special coating dissolves in the small intestine to release the enzymes that help digest food
CREON® should always be taken during meals or snacks, because it is most effective when the enzymes mix with the food in the stomach.
Please note CREON® should not be substituted with another pancreatic enzyme product.
